Ultrasound is a common diagnostic procedure. High-frequency sound waves are used to “echo,” or bounce, off the body to create an image. For this exam, the sonographer applies a special gel to the skin, and a wand-like instrument (called a transducer) is positioned over it. Sound waves are generated and reflected back to the transducer as electric impulses, which produce an image on a computer screen. A radiologist will review the images and generate a report, which will be sent to your physician.
A physician’s order is required for an ultrasound examination. Most procedures are covered by insurance. If you have any questions regarding co-pays/deductibles you should contact your insurance carrier.
